AWC to Hold Annual Chili Cook-Off March 8
The Awareness Washington County Board announced that the 8th annual Chili Cook Off will be held March 8 from 4-7 at Southern Hills Church, Competition is open to anyone interested, and cash prizes will be awarded in several categories. There will be a prize for the judged Best Red Chili, as well as the judged Best White Chili. In addition, there are People’s Choice awards for Best Chili and Best Decorated booth. Other features of the event are the famous dessert auctions and the cookie cart. There will also be items available in the Silent Auction and the Bag Raffle.
Admission to the event is $10 for adults and $5 for children. All the chili you care to eat and crackers are included in the admission, along with ballots to vote for your favorite chili and best decorated booth.
Sponsorships for the event are available as well. Sponsors will be recognized in the media, on the AWC website, on table tents at every table at the event, and on social media. There will be several hundred people attending.
Interested chili cooks can register using the form below or by contacting Marji Morris on Facebook, by email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or by phone at 812-216-6505.
“The event has become a social occasion,” said Morris. “Many people come at 4 and stay until the end to see who wins, although you don’t have to do that.” She continued, “Having a booth allows businesses to get themselves and their products or services in front of the public, just for the cost of their chili ingredients.” There will be a maximum of 12 teams so sign up soon, and guests can sample as many of the chilis as they can handle.

AWC Class of 2024 Day of Caring - August 25th
The 2024 AWC Class Project Day of Caring was a great success.
We had 34 volunteers who helped restrain benches, picnic tables & fencing. Volunteers also cleaned floors, washed windows, organized and weeded at various locations in Washington County.
We are grateful and thankful for all that helped.

Servant Leader Program Testimonials
I have gotten more confident. I have a better understanding of others. I've learned how to accept and work through conflicts. I strive to work harder. It has brought out a more bold vision of myself. I've learned to stretch. I look at things through different lenses.
I think that AWC has helped my confidence as a person and a leader. It assured me that it is ok to have my own opinion and that it's ok for it not to be the same as everybody else's. I will speak up more and share my ideas because they do matter.
I am a lot more aware of others' opinions. I understand people's different ways of thinking. I know how to "stretch" to come to an agreement. I know how to use resources to be able to do more. I am excited to be a part of our project and to provide that in the county.
I have gained more confidence in myself and feel as though my opinions/ideas are worth more than I thought. I also got to feel a sense of community and make lifelong friends along the way. I have grown in a lot of ways because of AWC.
1) Better understanding of different personalities
2) more comfortable expressing opinions
3) more reflective of my attitude-and the impact on others
4) Exposure to a whole group of people that I would not have met or interacted with
I've become more open and accepting. More ready to work with others instead of being the always right, in charge person who does everything myself.
I feel that AWC has given me a better understanding of how to relate to others in a group setting. It has given me tools to be a more productive person when working as part of an organization and renewed my desire to be active in the community.
Changes I've noticed since being a part of AWC are: more interest and involvement in my workplace. Taking on responsibility which makes a difference to the entire store. Also, within my family developing more patience and allowing myself to be more open to new ideas. Also, being an active part in my place of worship and making commitments, listening w/understanding, working w/Learning styles, being a part of the community, not just living in it.

Awareness Washington County Servant Leader Program
Knowing that everyone is a leader and equipped with leadership qualities, AWC educates a small group of leaders annually and sends them out into the community to implement their leadership skills. The AWC program is designed to motivate and encourage community based leadership throughout Washington County. AWC has provided leadership training to several hundred residents of Washington County since 1982. Awareness Washington County has established itself as a voice for change and force for change throughout Washington County.
The Awareness Washington County (AWC) Experience is a 9 month community leadership program. It begins with a 2-day retreat in September. The curriculum provides a framework for developing leadership skills, promoting an awareness of Washington County history, an appreciation for the many strengths of the county, a study of the business issues in the county, and a commitment to servant leadership.
We look forward to working with you to build a better Washington County!

Laura Wanke - AWC Co-Facilitator
Laura works as a University Supervisor at the University of Louisville.
She participated in We the Youth circa 1996 or 1997 and is a graduate of the class of 2022.
AWC is a crown jewel of Washington County and it is an innovative and welcoming group of people who are dedicated to giving back to their community in new and interesting ways.
Working as a co-facilitator Laura gets to share her love for teaching and helping in a way that can better the community that we live in. She also enjoys being part of a group of people who are dedicated to making the world a better place.
Cheryl Lee - AWC Co-Facilitator

I graduated from the Awareness Washington County Class of 1998 and from Team Leadership, a facilitator training class in 1999.
I have been facilitating classes since 2000, minus a few years I took off to pursue my nursing career.
I am currently a registered nurse at IU Health Paoli in the Emergency Department, where I have been employed for 12 years.
I facilitate for AWC because I believe in servant leadership. The class is a great tool for newcomers in our community as well as for those who have lived here their entire lives. I enjoy meeting the class members each year and watching them discover the servant leader inside themselves.
Yvonne Maxey - AWC Board Secretary/Assistant to Directors

I graduated from AWC class in 2010 and am a past board member and past board president.
I was a former Assistant to the We the Youth Director.
I have been the Assistant to the AWC Directors from 2015-present, the AWC Board Secretary from 2016-present and the AWC Alumni Chairperson from 2018-present.
I developed a passion for Awareness Washington County while attending the class and my passion grows with each year. Helping to make this valuable organization thrive, grow and expand their outreach in Washington County and beyond, is my goal.
Seeing new class members & watching their journey as their skills grow along with their confidence in themselves is very rewarding every year. The friendships I have made are great blessings to me!
